Get past the ChatGPT Projects file limit.
A Project caps how many files you can add, and on the lower plans you can hit it fast. Drop the whole folder here instead. Everything, even the PDFs, is read right in your browser and comes back as one file, so all your documents take a single Project slot.
- One file fills one Project slot
- PDFs and Office docs read in-browser
- No sign-up, nothing uploaded
Drag your folder here
Everything for your Project, read in a second.
Where ChatGPT stops you.
ChatGPT counts files in three separate places, and each has its own cap. A single combined file stays under all of them, because it is one file no matter how many documents went into it.
| Where you add files | What it caps | Limit today |
|---|---|---|
| Project files | Shared across every chat in the Project | 5 free, 25 on Go and Plus, 40 on Pro and above |
| Files in one chat | Attachments on a single message | About 10 at a time |
| Custom GPT knowledge | Files a Custom GPT can reference | 20 |
Figures as of August 2026, and OpenAI changes them often. Check the current cap in the OpenAI help center. On Claude, Gemini, or NotebookLM instead? See how to share all your files with any AI.
From a full folder to one Project file.
- 1
Drop the whole folder
Drag in every document you want the Project to know about. Subfolders come along, and you can add a repo or a link too.
- 2
It reads everything here
PDFs, Word, Excel, and notes are turned into text in this tab, with a file tree at the top. Nothing is uploaded.
- 3
Add the one file to your Project
Upload the single file to the Project, and every chat in it can read the whole set from one slot.
Why one file beats twenty in a Project.
Adding documents one by one runs into the cap and scatters them, so the model sees a loose pile with no order. A single file keeps every document together, in order, under a file tree, and leaves the rest of your Project slots free for the work you add later.
One slot, the whole set
Whether it is five documents or fifty, the combined file counts as one of your Project files. The Project reads it as a single labeled set, and every chat you open inside the Project can reference the whole thing.
Thirty documents, one Project file.
A folder that would blow past the Project cap goes in. A single file comes out, labeled as documents so ChatGPT reads it as one set, not as source code.

...Common questions.
- How many files can I add to a ChatGPT Project?
- A ChatGPT Project holds 5 files on Free, 25 on Go and Plus, and 40 on Pro, Edu, Business and Enterprise, and only 10 can be uploaded at once. ChatGPT calls them the project's sources, which is why the limit gets searched for by that word as often as by "files". OpenAI adjusts these numbers, so check the current one. Combining your documents into a single file first means the whole set takes just one of those slots.
- What should I do when a Project will not take any more files?
- OpenAI's own advice is to remove older uploads, combine file data, or split the work across several projects. Removing means losing context and splitting means the chats stop sharing it, so combining is the one that keeps everything in front of the model. Drop the folder here and the whole set comes back as one file that fills a single slot.
- Does combining files count as one file in my Project?
- Yes. FileConcat returns a single file, so however many documents go in, only one file is added to the Project and it uses one slot. The file tree at the top keeps every document labeled and in order.
- What is the difference between Project files and files I attach in a chat?
- Project files are shared across every chat in the Project; files you attach to a single message are limited to about 10 at a time and only that chat can see them. One combined file works for both, and it stays available to every future chat in the Project.
- Can ChatGPT read the PDFs and Word documents inside the combined file?
- Yes. FileConcat pulls the text out of PDF, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files in your browser and writes it into the combined file as plain text, so ChatGPT reads the content directly without you converting anything first.
- Are my documents uploaded to a server?
- No. Every file, including the PDFs and Office documents, is read in your browser tab. Nothing is uploaded, and there is no account to create.
